Racist note sent to football boss

Ady Mings
Mings said he was shocked and dismayed by the contents of the letter

An anonymous letter to Chippenham Town FC's black manager containing racist comments has been handed to the police.

Ady Mings said the note, which claimed to be from a fan, said black men did not know how to run football clubs.

Mings, who has managed the Southern League club since January 2007, said he had given the note to Wiltshire police out of concern for his family's safety.

"You've got to treat these things as quite serious issues, because where does it stop?"

"I've got a son who lives in the town and I've also got elderly parents," he added.

"What's to stop them going a different angle and bringing my family into it?

"I've taken it to the police who are now dealing with the matter."

He said the letter talked about how he had "dragged the football club down", about his colour and generally made malicious, negative comments.

"[I was] quite shocked and dismayed at first," he said.

"I find it quite despicable that someone can go out of their way to try to offend me, when all I've done is try to be positive for the football club.

"In 2008, I like to think that people of any ethnicity can move on and get any job," he said.

"It doesn't matter what colour you are, if you are good at your job then I believe you should be given a chance."
