The club wants to build a new stadium on their old site |
Swindon Town's main benefactor has backed plans for a new stadium on the site of the County Ground. Sir Seton Wills has ploughed millions of pounds into the club in the past.
Now he believes the side needs a new home to ensure its future, and is supporting the team's hopes of building an up-to-date ground.
Sir Seton was among a delegation from the club and Swindon Borough Council on a fact-finding visit to Reading's Madejski Stadium on Friday.
He told the BBC he thinks the Reading ground would be a good example for Swindon Town to follow.
"It is a very nice arena for anything, whether it is a pop concert, playing football, rugby, any sport, it's a proper arena.
"It encourages everybody to come: women, children, everybody. It is a safe, nice environment and you can enjoy watching whatever sport you like.
"I think our site in Swindon is a very good one, and I am sure the councillors and the people of Swindon would like to see a facility of this type near the Magic Roundabout at the County Ground."
Swindon Town FC hopes to work with the local council, which owns the land the County Ground is on, to redevelop the site.
The club has already had one proposed development at Shaw Community Forest turned down. Plans for a 23,000-seater stadium there were shelved in the face of considerable local opposition.
Bosses say a new ground is vital to secure the club's future. It is currently losing 750,000 a year and has faced two winding-up orders in the past year.
