Prison 'must tackle overcrowding'
Prison warder
Relationships between staff and prisoners were said to be good
Erlestoke Prison must take action against overcrowding, say inspectors.

The Chief Inspector of Prisons says the Wiltshire jail is facing considerable challenges.

A full inspection, carried out in April, revealed the facility was basically sound, with committed staff.

But inspectors say the jail needs a number improvements.

Good relationships

The population is now too large for every inmate in the category C jail to be offered education or work placements.

The report also said the prison, near Devizes, needs to develop an anti-bullying policy and improve its resettlement procedures.

But it was praised for the fact that 88% of prisoners had never felt unsafe while incarcerated there.

It said there were good relationships between staff and prisoners, and supportive management from the role of governor downwards.
