Erlestoke Prison in Wiltshire has been criticised over delapidated buildings.

And some staff have failed to adapt to new ideas on rehabilitation, according to a report.

The findings follow an unannounced visit by government inspectors.

They found cells in the oldest part of Erlestoke Prison, on the edge of Salisbury Plain near Devizes, had damp walls and poor furniture.

Cleanliness was also criticised.

Other accommodation met with approval, and the report noted that prisoners with good behaviour records were transferred to better cells.

The report said the governor, Jayne Baker, put emphasis on rehabilition and preparation of prisoners ahead of their release.

But the report found long-serving staff did not share her thinking.

It said they should learn to embrace the culture of change. The Chief Inspector of Prisons emphasised that the report was positive, and recognised high commitment among staff on a tight budget.
