Demolition work has started on a 7.5m project to turn a housing estate into a solar-powered "village". Planners say 64 bedsits in the Primrose Hill area of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, are being demolished to make way for 79 energy efficient homes.
The new properties and existing homes are being fitted with solar panels to help reduce energy bills.
Kirklees Council said it would create one of the highest concentrations of domestic solar power in the UK.
Sustainable community
Yorkshire Housing Group, Kirklees Council and Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing are working together on the project to regenerate the area, which has been associated with anti-social behaviour.
Demolition teams have moved in to clear houses in the former Ridge Street and Ridge Close areas.
Jimm Reed, project manager, said: "The homes being demolished were in poor condition and it would have not have been cost effective to bring them up to the modern standards that the new homes will provide.
"The regeneration of the area means we will continue to work together long after the building work has been completed to ensure that this whole community becomes and stays a sustainable and desirable place to live for many years."
