A solar-powered road sign has proved a success in reducing speeds on one of Devon's busiest roads, according to the local council. The low-energy sign is expected to operate continually for 27 years if used for 10 hours every day.
The Light Emitting Diode (LED) was installed on the A38 at Watts Cottage, Burlescombe, Tiverton last December.
Speed readings taken two weeks before the sign was put up and 2 weeks after show a 6mph speed reduction.
Traffic experts say this type of reduction in speed could make a difference in stopping or causing an accident.
This solar-powered speed sign is completely independent of any mains electrics and Devon County Council says it could be used in many of the county's rural locations.
