Force to recruit extra officers
Chief constable Colin Cramphorn
Chief Constable Colin Cramphorn has welcomed the extra spending
Nearly 300 extra police officers and support staff will be recruited in West Yorkshire in the coming year.

The county's police authority has agreed a budget of 383m, a rise of 19m over this year's spending.

This means 223 extra police officers and civilians will be employed, some of them for the new homicide inquiry team.

There will also be 75 more community support officers which will take the total number of people employed by West Yorkshire police to 8,800.

Extra funding

To pay for this increased policing, council tax payers will have to pay around an extra 10p a week to the police authority.

The extra funding has been welcomed by West Yorkshire's chief constable, Colin Cramphorn.

"West Yorkshire still has fewer police officers per head of population than similar forces," he said.

"But this commitment to further growth and extra resources will enable the force to continue the positive action which has helped cut crime over the last year."
