Public 'noticing more officers'
People in West Yorkshire are aware of more officers being on patrol, according to the police authority.

More than 800 people were questioned at shopping centres in the county on the days before Christmas.

Results show that 59% of those questioned had seen more officers on the beat, while 58% said they felt safer walking around during the day.

Extra funding means that by the end of March the West Yorkshire force will have a record 5,600 officers.

Council tax bills

The authority also says that many crimes, such as burglary and thefts from motor vehicles, have been reduced.

A decision will soon have to be made about how much council tax bills will have to rise to fund any further expansion of the West Yorkshire force.

Mark Burns-Williamson, who chairs the authority, said: "I am conscious there is a balance to be struck and at the end of the day, if people want more police, they have to be paid for.

"What is important, and what we will be considering when setting the precept, is that any increase is put to good use and nets tangible results like those seen over the past year."
