Wardens will be issuing tickets seven days a week |
Motorists who park illegally in Leeds will soon stand a greater chance of being caught, councillors have warned. Leeds City Council is set to almost double its number of traffic wardens and extend their hours.
The change will happen in March when the authority takes over responsibility for enforcing parking rules from West Yorkshire Police.
Drivers are being warned about the clampdown by bus adverts, leaflets and posters in the city.
Common sense
The council currently has 33 wardens across the city.
From March, 60 will patrol the city and its suburbs between 0700 GMT and 2000 GMT for seven days a week.
Cars parked illegally outside public buildings, in bus lanes, disabled spaces and outside shops or people's homes will be targeted.
Councillor Steve Smith said: "This campaign is to change people's behaviour and warn them that unless they park properly, they will face a fine.
"We are seeking co-operation from motorists. Our attendants will enforce the law and do not receive bonuses for the number of PCNs (penalty charge notices) they issue.
"They will adopt a practical, common-sense approach to carrying out their enforcement duties."
