Father and son 'MPs' open centre
Tony Benn
Former MP Tony Benn will be with his son Hilary at the opening.
Father and son politicians Tony and Hilary Benn will be together to open a "healthy living" community centre in Leeds on Friday.

The current Leeds Central MP and former Chesterfield MP will officially open the Hamara centre in Beeston.

The 1m project includes a doctors' surgery, meeting rooms and computer facilities.

Hamara is Urdu for "ours" and the centre is for all the local community, said project director Hanif Malik.

'Holistic approach'

The centre has to provide much needed services for residents in a disadvantaged part of Leeds, he said.

"We take a holistic approach in relation to reducing health inequalities and therefore the range of services delivered at Hamara aims to tackle the wider determinants of poor health," said Mr Malik.

The presence of both Benns reflects the importance of the centre, he added.

The scheme was funded by the Faith Together in Leeds 11 consortium, the New Opportunities fund, Leeds City Council, the neighbourhood renewal fund and the area's NHS primary care trust.
