City houses 'priced out of reach'
Leeds
Booming prices in Leeds are leaving locals behind
Booming property prices in Leeds are making it impossible for first-time buyers to get their foot on the ladder, a tenants organisation says.

Even the most modest back-to-back terraced houses in the city are priced out of bounds for new buyers, the Leeds Tenants Federation has warned.

It says prices have rocketed to three times the average salary.

More than 150 residents are gathering on Monday to discuss ways to ensure affordable housing for local people.

Council speakers

"It is almost impossible for first-time buyers in Leeds to get a foot on the housing ladder - even the worst housing is beyond the reach of most people's pocket," said chairman Michael Hall.

"That's the big issue for Leeds families - will our children be able to afford to live in this city?

"There is a big gap between rich and poor in this city and decent affordable homes are the first casualty."

Speakers at the conference include council housing officials, housing associations and executives from arms- length management organisations.
