New Year to get bangs not bands
New Year concert in Millennium Square, Leeds
Snow did not deter Leeds revellers on New Year's Eve last year
New Year's Eve in Leeds is set to be quieter this year, as councillors have abandoned the idea of a concert in the city's Millennium Square.

As previous New Year events attracted only small crowds, they think extra fireworks would be better value.

Last year's show went on, despite the snow which cancelled events elsewhere.

Coun John Procter says crowds will still be free to mill around the square but the only entertainment will be the free midnight firework display.

Collective experience

Staff at the Qube bar on Millennium Square are disappointed.

General manager Adrian Grainger said that while families and friends would get together, a larger collective experience would be lost.

"I think it is something that has been taken away," he added.

Councillors say the music events are expensive and difficult to stage.

Coun Procter said: "What we have seen on previous years is people will come along and hang around in the square and see the fireworks go off.

"That will go on just the same as it always has done."
