A 29-year-old woman from south Wales has died after being found hanging in her cell at a West Yorkshire prison. Marie Walsh was on remand for theft at HMP New Hall in Wakefield. She died on Thursday night.
The incident brings the total number of self-inflicted deaths of women inmates across England and Wales in 2004 to 11. The entire total for 2003 was 14.
In May, campaigners gathered outside the prison to raise public awareness about the death toll of women in jail.
