The club is said to be the first of its kind in the north |
A 2.5m youth club is being developed in an inner city area of Leeds. The city council is creating the Make Space Club, aimed at 11-16 year olds, which will be run by the community centre in Woodhouse.
Organisers say the club will act as a vital social and educational gathering place, housed in a safe environment.
A wide range of sports, leisure and arts activities will also be available at community centre when the new club is up and running.
Centre renovated
Michael McGowan, Labour councillor for the Woodhosue area, said the club is the first of its kind in the north and one of 3,000 due to be developed throughout the country.
"Teenagers will be able to relax there as well as take part in a number of exciting activities," he said.
"This kind of project illustrates that we are listening to young people, their thoughts and meeting their needs.
"The Woodhouse-based club is a British prototype showing that once again Leeds is at the at the forefront of social and educational development for young people."
Existing facilities at the Woodhouse Community Centre are being renovated to accommodate the new club.
If successful, the council's Labour group hope to expand the model to other parts of the city.
