Sports schemes in Wakefield, Leeds and Hull are to share �2.4m from the National Lottery and Sport England.

There will be tennis and netball courts at the KC Stadium in Hull as well as an extension to the skate park.

In Leeds, there will be a synthetic turf pitch at Thomas Danby College.

While Glasshoughton near Wakefield will get a new multi-use games area.

Creative ideas

The Glasshoughton Community Forum will also be able to employ a development worker to encourage local people to make greater use of existing sports facilities.

Patrick Carter, who chairs Sport England, said: "We want to help combat obesity by encouraging the nation to get more fit through sports participation.

"We have purposefully encouraged creative ideas for these new facilities to make them more appealing for people to try sport for the first time.
