Public have say on arts quarter
West Yorkshire Playhouse
The arts quarter centres round the West Yorkshire Playhouse

Details of the final phase of Leeds' arts quarter at Quarry Hill are being unveiled to the public.

Two developers, Caddick Developments, based in Knottingley, and Sterling Capitol, of Leeds, are competing to win the prestigious last space.

The winning scheme will join the new BBC North headquarters, the Northern Ballet Theatre Company, a new hotel and residential provision for the West Yorkshire Playhouse and Leeds College of Music.

Local residents and businesses are being invited to have their say on the two designs.

Conference space

The plans will be on display at the Civic Hall on 12 and 13 May from 0900 BST until 1700 BST.

They comprise a mix of office, residential and leisure facilities, although one also includes exhibition and conference space.

Councillor Elizabeth Minkin said: "The successful scheme will complete the redevelopment of this part of the city centre, making it a very significant development which is why we are asking for people's opinions now.

"Quarry Hill is now a thriving section of the city centre and the completion of this work will reinforce it as Leeds' arts quarter."

Comments on the two schemes will be presented to the council's Executive Board in the next few months.

Work is likely to start in spring 2004 and completion phased over a three-year period.
