About 800 people have gathered to mark the inauguration of the new Bishop of Birmingham. The Rt Rev David Urquhart, 54, a former BP executive, was formally Bishop of Birkenhead in the Diocese of Chester and has served in Coventry and Hull.
About 150 others watched the Service of Inauguration at Birmingham Cathedral on a big screen at a nearby pub, a diocese spokesman said.
Bishop David succeeds the Most Revd Dr John Sentamu, now Archbishop of York.
The new bishop was ordained after 10 years working in commercial management with BP.
He then served in two inner-urban parishes in Hull before moving to Coventry, where he was vicar of Holy Trinity Church in the city centre.
The Diocese of Birmingham has a population of more than 1.3m people, taking in parts of the Black Country, Worcestershire and Warwickshire.
