Woodland fears over airport plan
Birmingham Airport
A third terminal could be built at the airport
A nature trust is worried plans to extend an airport will destroy some ancient woodland.

Birmingham International Airport has announced plans to its extend its runway as well as for a second runway and third passenger terminal.

But the Woodland Trust says the airport's new boundary will cut through 22 hectares (54 acres) of coppice.

The expansion plans, which needs approval from Solihull Council, are open for consultation until March 2006.

A trust spokesman said the airport boundary would cut through Hampton Coppice while possibly cause damage to Barber's Coppice.

"Ancient woodland is our richest habitat for wildlife, it is irreplaceable and we must do all we can to stop its destruction around Birmingham."
