The routes add to those operated at Nottingham East Midlands Airport
Low-fare airline bmibaby has announced a series of new routes from Birmingham International Airport.

From 7 January 2005 the company will be operating more than 100 flights every week to nine European destinations including Alicante, Prague and Geneva.

The expansion will initially create more than 150 jobs at the airport.

A company spokesman said according to figures from the Department for Transport the move is expected to create about 1,000 jobs in the area.

The new routes - which also include flights to Malaga, Palma, Amsterdam, Edinburgh, and Belfast - will be in addition to the services bmibaby already operates from Nottingham East Midlands Airport.

Tony Davis, the managing director of the airline, said: "Directly we are contributing to jobs locally with the recruitment of new cabin crew and pilots.

"However, with the one million plus passengers we're projecting from Birmingham by 2005, Department for Transport figures suggest that the wider local impact of bmibaby in the West Midlands will be an additional 1,000 local jobs."

The company also operates from Gatwick, Manchester, Cardiff, Teesside, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Belfast airports.
