Inquest into Villa steward death
David Ireland
David Ireland's family said he loved his work
An inquest has been opened and adjourned into the death of an Aston Villa football steward who died after he was kicked to the ground.

David Ireland, 49, was injured when trouble flared between rival fans after a Carling Cup clash with Queens Park Rangers in Birmingham on 22 September.

Mr Ireland, from Studley, Warwickshire, died in hospital on 8 October.

The father-of-four's family have issued a statement saying he was a caring man who loved his work.

Broken arm

It reads: "David will be sadly missed by his wife and four children.

"He was a caring father who enjoyed his work as a steward for all sports, not just football.

"We would like to thank friends and neighbours for the huge amount of support they have given us and for all the flowers and messages of condolence."

Mr Ireland was taken to Birmingham's City hospital with serious injuries, including a broken arm.

Police have said it is not yet clear whether his injuries caused his death.
