Stars confirmed for club benefit

Paul Gascoigne has recently spoken of his battle with drink and drugs

A host of past footballing stars, including Paul Gascoigne and Peter Beardsley, have been confirmed for a fundraising game for Darlington FC.

The match, on 3 May, will raise cash for the League Two club, which went into administration in February.

Also due to take part were Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate and Darlington MP Alan Milburn.

The match has been organised by Quakers manager Dave Penney, after the club reported debts approaching £5m.

A club spokesman said: "A team of all stars will go head-to-head with the Darlington 1999-2000 play-off team.

"The names of those playing include a host a former stars such as Paul Gascoigne, Peter Beardsley, Gareth Southgate, Kevin Ball, Colin Cooper and Steve Agnew.

"This game will be fantastic entertainment and a superb end to the season. It will be a great family day out."

Gascoigne, 41, has recently spoken of his battle with drinks and drugs.

Tickets for the event cost £10 for adults and £5 for children.
