Airshow attracts a million people
Red Arrows
The Red Arrows traditionally draw the biggest crowds at the show
About a million people turned out for the 18th Sunderland International Airshow, according to organisers.

The annual event was held on the seafront between Roker and Whitburn on Saturday and Sunday.

Four-plane aerobatic formation team the Blades - who opened the Beckhams' pre-World Cup party in May - made their debut at the show.

Airshow director Peter Chapman said that, as always, success depended on the sunshine - or lack of it.

He said: "In any outdoor event you can organise and organise, but really it's down to the weather. Fortunately it was beautiful on Sunday and that really brought the crowds in.

"The big attraction as usual was the Red Arrows, but I think we've tried to keep it fresh every year and the Blades were immensely popular.

"We also know that many pubs, restaurants, hotels and bed and breakfasts were full for the weekend, so as usual it was a great boost for local business."

The line up also included the Eurofighter Typhoon, Tornado GR4, and Harrier jump jet as well as the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight of Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster bomber.
