Record crowds expected at airshow
Red Arrows
The Red Arrows will perform at the show
Organisers of the 18th Sunderland International Airshow are hoping for record crowds this weekend.

Up to one million people are expected to line the seafront from Whitburn to Roker for the two-day show which begins on Saturday, weather permitting.

Making their debut at the event will be the Blades, a four-plane aerobatic formation team which opened the Beckhams' pre-World Cup party in May.

The show is expected to boost the city's economy by 12m.

The line up also includes the Red Arrows, Eurofighter Typhoon, Tornado GR4, and Harrier jump jet as well as the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight of Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster bomber.

Bob Symonds, leader of Sunderland City Council, said: "Bringing people into the city from outside the Sunderland area is a primary aim of the airshow. Research from previous years shows that we achieve this.

"We hope once again to welcome visitors from across the country who not only visit the airshow but also sample some of the city's other attractions."
