The Race last visited the Tyne in 1993
Hundreds of captains and ship operators are visiting Tyneside to find out more about a prestigious maritime festival.

NewcastleGateshead is hosting the Tall Ships Race in 2005 and this weekend's Sail Training International conference is a chance to showcase the area.

It will be the first chance for many people to see how the Quayside has been transformed since the last Tall Ships event in 1993.

The aim is to convince ships to sign up for the event in July next year.

Newcastle City Council Tall Ships manager Phil Payne said: "The timing of this crucial conference could not have been better for us.

Maritime heritage

"Not only does it allow captains and ship owners to see the city where the race is to be held for themselves, but it takes place as race decisions are being discussed.

"This is the perfect opportunity for us to showcase the city to captains and ship operators who may only remember the River Tyne before its dramatic transformation."

The Tall Ships Race will be a highlight if the SeaBritain 2005 campaign which is aimed at encouraging people around the country to enjoy the nation's maritime heritage.

Next year also marks the bicentennial of the Battle of Trafalgar.
