Police say they are called to numerous incidents |
Children are being warned about the dangers of ball bearing guns after a teenager was hit in the face. Northumbria Police are urging youngsters to be aware of the consequences after a number of incidents in the East End of Newcastle.
In one, a 16-year-old girl was hit in the face after a gun was fired from a car, although she was not badly hurt.
Police are calling on children, parents and retailers to act responsibly over the guns.
Armed officers
Det Insp Neil Whitehead said: "We are trying to cut out the indiscriminate and irresponsible use of all ball bearing guns and air weapons which are very cheap and readily available.
"We are called out to numerous incidents where people have been spotted with air weapons or imitation weapons. When these are reported to us we are often unable to differentiate between imitation firearms and the real thing.
"For the safety of the public and the officers attending we have to provide an appropriate response and this means sending armed officers.
"Adults and children who possess air weapons or imitation firearms in a public place are frequently a danger to themselves, the public and the police who respond."
Officers will be visiting stores in the city to ensure shopkeepers are aware of legislation.
