James Mulligan was hit by the car as he waited at a bus stop |
An inquest on a pensioner who was killed in a hit-and-run has heard police interviews with the two men who were in the car which killed him. Jimmy Mulligan, 73, was run down as he waited for a bus near his home in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, in May 2002.
The police later arrested Christopher Eade and Robert Webber who admitted being in the car.
But no charges were brought against either man - who were aged 18 and 20 at the time - as it could not be established who was driving the car at the time at the time of the incident.
Pc Andrew Smith told the inquest on Wednesday that Mr Eade and Mr Webber blamed each other for being behind the wheel.
'No proof'
Pc Smith also told the inquest both men admitted using drugs before the accident.
Mr Eade saying they had taken heroin, cannabis and valium.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) decided not to prosecute because it was impossible to conclusively prove who was driving at the time of the accident.
The coroner told an earlier witness - Mr Webber's aunt June - that he did not believe her evidence.
She repeatedly claimed not to remember what had happened when the two men turned up at her house after the accident.
The inquest is due to resume on Thursday.
