Model Nell McAndrew is set to run the race |
A record number of entrants have been accepted for the 28th annual Great North Run. Organisers say 52,000 people will start the race between Newcastle and South Shields on Sunday. Celebrity runners this year include model Nell McAndrew, radio presenter Scott Mills and ex-champion jockey Richard Dunwoody. Leanne Symonds, of Northumberland, has been named as the event's one millionth entrant since the first race in 1981. The event has grown considerably since 12,000 runners set off on the inaugural race, with 50,000 starting last year. Extra Metro trains and shuttle buses will be provided for those travelling to the event. There will be live coverage on BBC One from 0930 until 1330 BST.
