Extra trains for Great North Run

Extra public transport is being laid on to cope with the thousands of runners and spectators expected at the Great North Run on Sunday.

Metro operator Nexus will be running extra trains between Newcastle and South Shields, which is the closest station to the half-marathon finish.

Both Shields ferries will be operating in tandem until 1800 BST.

Shuttle buses will connect the finish line with the ferry landing, nearby Metro stations and Newcastle.

Passengers are being advised they will not be able to board trains at Haymarket Metro station until after the race has started because of development work.

Andy Bairstow, Nexus director of communications, said: "We have laid on extra services to ensure the day runs smoothly, cutting down on the amount of traffic congestion both before and after the race."
