Comedy writer Ian Le Frenais is to be awarded the Freedom of North Tyneside.

The 71-year-old grew up in Whitley Bay and is best known as co-creator of "Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads?" and "Auf Wiedersehen, Pet".

The title of Honorary Freeman is the highest honour that the council can bestow and he will join Alan Shearer, Wallsend Boys Club and HMS Tyne.

He was nominated for his achievement in comedy writing and in the promotion of the North East through film.

A ceremony will take place at the Cobalt Business Park on Wednesday where the North Tyneside Veterans Committee will also be awarded the same honour.

The charity was recognised for the work they do for all war veterans in North Tyneside.

Cllr Joan Bell said: "Ian La Frenais has a strong personal connection to the area.

"His programmes all contained frequent references to areas of North Tyneside, in particular Killingworth, Wallsend and Whitley Bay.

"We're delighted to make him an Honorary Freeman of the Borough."

Ian Le Frenais and his writing partner Dick Clement both now live in Los Angeles.
