Booze-fuelled disorder crackdown
Tough powers are being used to combat drunk and disorderly behaviour on the streets of two Northumberland towns.

Police are warning that drink could be poured down the drain and people arrested if they fail to comply with measures in Alnwick and Amble.

Northumbria Police said the Designated Public Place Order (DPPO) will allow officers to seize alcohol from people believed to be involved in disorder.

Both areas are popular with revellers from surrounding towns and cities.

Insp Rod Maclennan said: "This is another tool to help us drive down drunkenness, disorder and nuisance behaviour in Alnwick and Amble.

"In the past people had to be committing offences before we had the power to stop them, but this lets us nip the problem in the bud."

Paul Bolton, drug development officer with Alnwick District Council, added: "We want to encourage people to come to Alnwick and Amble to enjoy themselves, but to do so sensibly."
