Police have caught young drinkers using a range of fake ID cards |
Youngsters using fake ID cards to buy drinks in pubs are being warned they could face prison. Police in Newcastle say they are still catching teenagers under the age of 18 who are using false identification to purchase alcohol.
Anyone found using or making fake ID card may now be liable to offences under the Identity Cards Act 2006, which was introduced last month.
This can mean a maximum prison sentence of 10 years.
'In trouble'
Sergeant Boyd Weddell, Newcastle Area Command licensing officer, said: "Although most licensees are well aware of their responsibilities about serving under 18s, we are still catching youngsters who are trying to get round the system by producing and using a range of fake identity cards.
"These range from false driving licences to fake national ID cards and the quality of the reproductions varies enormously.
"However, they are made we want these youngsters to know the trouble they could be in if they are caught with them.
"Now, not only could they be liable to committing offences under the Licensing Act, but also the Identity Cards Act, which has a maximum punishment of ten years imprisonment."
