 Tyneside-born Sting becomes an honorary Doctor of Music |
Tyneside-born singer Sting was among those who received honorary degrees at the University of Newcastle on Friday. The former front-man with The Police became an honorary Doctor of Music (DMus) at a ceremony in the university's King's Hall.
Former Northumbria and Metropolitan Police chief Lord Stevens became an honorary Doctor of Civil Law.
Several other individuals received degrees conferred by University Chancellor Lord Patten.
They included the founders of Newcastle's Centre for the Children's Books, Mary Briggs and Elizabeth Hammill, and Len Fenwick, the chief executive of Newcastle Hospitals NHS Trust.
Accepting the honour, world-music fan Sting said: "It is very exciting to see the diversity of music being studied at Newcastle University, with developments like the folk and traditional music degree now being taught alongside classical and popular music."
