A university says investment in hi-tech security equipment has resulted in a big reduction in campus crime. The news from Newcastle University came as a new state-of-the-art digital security control centre was installed.
CCTV cameras have helped to cut crimes committed in the university grounds by more than 50% over the past six years.
Bosses at the university, which caters for 18,000 students, say the powerful new digital camera system will help reduce crime further.
The university has worked with Northumbria Police in developing the system.
'Feel safe'
University head of security, George Westwater, said: "Newcastle University enjoys a relatively low rate of crime and we are working hard to keep it that way.
"We are determined that students and staff should continue to feel safe and that their property is protected.
"We have 18,000 students and 4,600 staff, which is the population of a small town. "
