Park heritage heads for Chelsea
Saltwell Towers
Saltwell Towers has been turned into a visitor centre.
The regeneration of a Victorian park on Tyneside is to feature nationally at the world-famous Chelsea Flower Show.

A 10-metre display at the event, which runs from 24 May until 28 May, will depict Gateshead's Saltwell Park.

Gateshead Council staff are loading up hundreds of plants from the council's nursery to create the Chelsea display.

Saltwell Park, which was first opened to the public in 1876, has undergone a 10m project to restore it to its former glory.

The Chelsea display will include a model of Saltwell Towers, a water feature representing the Dene and a maze using lavender plants and Victorian bedding schemes.

Cultural role

The display will be planted with salvias, marigolds, ferns, calla lilies and bedding plants.

Those who miss it at Chelsea, can see it at Gateshead Summer Flower Show in July.

Councillor John McElroy said: "Gateshead has seen a number of major developments in recent years but Saltwell Park's history has played an invaluable role in our culture and in the lives of local people for many years - we're extremely proud of it and we're delighted that are able to show it at Chelsea.

"Our horticultural employees have spent months and months of careful planning to develop this exhibit and I look forward to hearing the reaction of Chelsea judges and local people when it is exhibited at the Summer Flower Show."
