Travellers' school lessons begin
Newcastle Hoppings
The fair takes place on Newcastle's Town Moor
A school which provides temporary lessons for the children of workers at a travelling fair is set to open its doors in the North East.

The Hoppings is one of Europe's largest fairs and opens on Newcastle's Town Moor on Friday.

Last year 80 children enrolled for classes at the Hoppings School, which runs lessons every morning while the fair is in the city.

Organisers say they are hoping that the school will be as popular this year.

Traveller teacher Diane Barlow, who has organised the school for the past five years, said: "The Hoppings School is very popular and we see lots of pupils coming back year after year.

Summer months

"We run lessons every morning while the fair is in town to enable the pupils to keep up with their school work and take part in other activities, such as arts and crafts.

"It's really important to make sure the young people can carry on with their learning while they are on the road and it's very rewarding to know that the families who work on the Hoppings value the school so much."

The children are all given work packs by their winter-based schools, which they study from during the summer months when they travel with their families.

This year the pupils will be able to stay in touch with their base schools using laptop computers, provided through a government scheme.
