Europe's largest travelling fair arrives in Newcastle upon Tyne on Friday - for the 121st time.
The Hoppings will take place on the city's Town Moor and is expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors.
And Northumbria Police is hoping for another successful year, with only 16 offences in 2002.
Inspector Graham Ward said: "The Hoppings is a great traditional event for the showmen and residents of Newcastle alike.
Firm policing
"We have worked closely with both the showmen and Newcastle City Council to ensure the fair is enjoyed by everyone.
"Thousands of people visit the fair every day and the vast majority do so to enjoy themselves.
"There is however, a very small minority who have in the past caused trouble, mainly linked to excessive consumption of alcohol."
He said police would deal firmly with anyone intent on spoiling the fun of others.
During the Hoppings in 2002 up to 30 police officers were on duty at the site, including Special Constables.
