 World class stars will be on display at the event |
Internationally renowned skaters are on Tyneside on Sunday to take part in a celebration of urban culture. Extreme Event is part of Newcastle's Hotbed 2004 programme and provides a showcase for the best skateboarders, in-line skaters and BMXers.
The event marks the opening of a �250,000 skatepark at Exhibition Park.
Among those taking part are world in-line champion Albert Hooi and last year's title holder Matt Watts, from the United States.
David Faulkner, executive member for culture heritage and sport on Newcastle City Council, said: "Young people and their youth culture are an essential part of this city's vibrancy.
"Hotbed 2004 is all about celebrating the contribution of our parks and open spaces to the city's culture.
"The new skatepark has provided a fantastic leisure space where young people can enjoy their favourite activities."
As well as the extreme sport displays there will be street dancing and break dancing displays, a basketball competition , and other attractions.
