Swimming pool users in East Cleveland have been given assurances that facilities are to remain, amid concerns over who is to manage leisure centres. Fears about pools in Loftus, Saltburn and Guiborough, surfaced after Redcar and Cleveland Council put maintenance contracts out to tender.
One tender has suggested building an Olympic-size pool to replace some existing facilities.
But council bosses insist existing pools will remain for the time being.
The council's cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism Dave Fitzpatrick said: "I can categorically state this council has no intention of closing any pools for the foreseeable future."
He said the council was legally bound to consider all the contents of the tendering document, but would continue to subsidise leisure facilities by about 1m a year.
"People are jumping to conclusions, but nothing has been decided," he added.
