Tomatoes grown with factory waste

Tomatoes will be able to grow even in the depths of winter
A state-of-the-art production plant allowing tomatoes to be grown all year round has opened on Teesside.

The vast glasshouse complex in Billingham houses about 216,000 tomato plants in four varieties, and runs on waste from a nearby factory.

Steam and carbon dioxide, which would normally be released into the atmosphere, is pumped in providing heating and a boost to growth.

This allows varieties normally imported from Europe in winter to be grown.

The complex, the size of 20 football pitches, utilises the latest computer technology alongside bees for pollination.

Phil Thompson, the site manager, said: "It's more complicated than a conventional plant, but we're getting there, and several other growers in the UK have expressed an interest."
