Computer control promises perfect raspberries
Computer controlled glasshouses are helping to increase the UK raspberry growing season to almost nine months thanks to the work of a tomato expert.

Chris Tirrell, of Oakington, Cambridge, is employing techniques learned from more than 40 years as a tomato farmer.

He said: "The secret is a glasshouse allowing maximum light penetration plus equipment of sufficient quality to be able to trap heat during night time.

"The computer is then used to replicate perfect raspberry growing conditions."

The UK raspberry market is currently worth about 49.9m a year and supermarkets say demand has grown by 28% in the past year.
