Flats to get solar power panels
A project to power a block of flats on Teesside by solar energy has won backing from the government.

The scheme, in Redcar, is to share in a 1.35m handout aimed to boost green energy projects throughout the UK.

Four blocks of flats, owned by Coast and Country Housing, will have Photovoltaic solar roof panels installed in the coming months.

The housing association already has "warm zone" scheme, in which it utilises alternative forms of energy.

Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks said: "This round of funding will boost solar generation throughout the UK.

Carbon dioxide

"These projects will produce clean, renewable electricity and put the drive for secure energy that doesn't harm the environment right at the heart of local communities."

Photovoltaic systems are non-polluting energy sources that convert sunlight directly into electricity, even on cloudy days.

For every year a typical household system operates, one tonne of carbon dioxide emissions can be saved.

A spokesman for Coast and County Housing said: "Awareness of photovoltaic technology will be raised in the community as the benefits are experienced first hand.

"Installations will take place at blocks in Mersey Road, Roseberry Road, Westmorland Road and Devon Close in Redcar."
