Tests are to be carried out on a Teesside estate after contaminants were found in soil taken from gardens. Residents have been told the measures are necessary after higher than normal levels of zinc, arsenic and lead were found in an area of Seaton Carew.
The council has sent out letters explaining that the land was previously used as a storage area for chemically-treated pit-props.
The exercise is expected to take place between January and March next year.
Soil samples will be taken from front and rear gardens of properties in Wainwright Walk, Wainwright Close, Hornby Close, Cowley Close and Lithgo Close.
'Fully informed'
Ian Parker, Hartlepool Council's acting director of neighbourhood services said: "The council has a statutory duty to inspect all potentially contaminated sites within the town.
"Because of the former use of this area, this site is a priority.
"At this stage it is important to emphasise that the contaminants relate mainly to areas around the edge of the estate.
"However, we would be remiss if we were not to carry out further tests of the estate itself."
Drop in sessions have been arranged to keep residents fully informed, and they have also been issued with a list of simple do's and don'ts.
