The seaside resort of Seaton Carew could soon be back on the tourist map of Britain. Hartlepool Council is drawing up a new multi-million pound tourism strategy to revitalise the town.
It is considering ways of bringing new visitor attractions to the town, as well as events and activities to draw holidaymakers to the area.
Kevin Parkes, who is responsible for the plan, said it was important to try to tie-in the promotion of Seaton Carew with other parts of the area.
He said: "One of the things were are particularly keen to look at is the wider offer in Hartlepool.
It has got potential... but I think it does need a good paint job |
"If we can attract people to the marina or the headland, then we can encourage them to participate in a visit to Seaton Carew at the same time. "I think we have got to be clever about promotion and marketing and as long as we keep expectations realistic we will be ok."
But local businessman Mark Jones, owner of the Staincliffe Hotel, said the town needs smartening up if it is to win back visitors.
"I think the tourism market could be a lot busier than it is, but I do think we need to spend quite a bit of money on Seaton itself to attract people and make them come back.
"I think it is looking a bit shabby.
"It has got potential. It has got a beautiful beach, a lovely walk from the Seaton to the marina, but I think it does need a good paint job."
