Post office announcement date set

The council said an announcement was expected next month
A campaign against rural post office closures is getting under way in West Sussex ahead of an expected announcement next month.

Council leader Henry Smith said there would be announcements in November that could affect the county's post offices.

He said: "Closing any in West Sussex would be a first-class disaster."

Thousands of branches are set to close across the UK. The government has said cuts are needed because the network loses 4m weekly.

'Vital role'

Mr Smith said there would be a "high-profile" campaign in the county.

He said: "Rural post offices are an essential part of village life not just in terms of the services they provide, but as a focal and information point for communities."

He added that the county council would also be concerned if any urban branches closed, in areas such as Crawley, because they played a "vital role".

The local authority has said closures of rural branches would damage much of what it wanted to achieve under its rural strategy.
