An area of Brighton is considering following in the footsteps of a Devon town, banning the use of plastic bags. Shoppers in Kemptown would be offered a reusable, cotton carrier bag bearing a logo and shop names.
Councillor Jill Mitchell, of Brighton and Hove City Council, said they would then be "politely asked" to use the bag again if they come back.
Wealden District Council is also planning to lobby Sussex retailers and ask them to boycott plastic bags.

In Kemptown, the idea is being put to local businesses to see if all 70 traders will join in with the scheme.
Jo Blood, one of the shopkeepers, said: "We are all small, independent businesses.
"Therefore, we think not only about the bottom line of the business but we also actually think about what impact we are having on the environment as well."
The anti-plastic bag campaign began when all 43 traders in Modbury in Devon stopped providing the bags to customers from 1 May.
