Campaigners who stopped plastic bags being used in a Devon town say they have been contacted by people across the world wanting to follow suit. All 43 traders and shopkeepers in the market town of Modbury banned plastic bags from shops on 1 May.
Instead they offer 100% biodegradable alternatives made from corn starch, canvas, paper or cotton.
The initiative was started after a local resident saw the damage plastic can cause marine life.
Wildlife camerawoman Rebecca Hosking said she had been inundated with calls from around the world including Australia, Russia and America.
Bags are offered at cost price of �1.50 for a small bag and �3.95 for a large bag.
The scheme is to last a minimum of six months.
