Former England football manager Sir Bobby Robson has been honoured for bringing the FA Cup to Ipswich in 1978.

Sir Bobby was given the freedom of the town by Ipswich Borough Council to mark the 30th anniversary of the Tractor Boys beating Arsenal 1-0 at Wembley.

Thousands of fans lined the streets on Monday as the heroes of 1978 were paraded around the town in an open bus.

Sir Bobby, 75, made his name at Ipswich Town before going on to manage England and Newcastle United.

Addressing Ipswich fans from the balcony of the town hall, Sir Bobby said: "We were the best side and we dominated the game.

"The goal was a late time in coming but it came at a good time. It was a famous victory, historical."

Sir Bobby was presented with the freedom of the town by Ipswich Borough Council's mayor Inga Lockington in front of about 5,000 people who had gathered on the Cornhill to watch the ceremony.

It followed the open top bus tour of the town which was relayed to fans on a giant screen.
