10m boost to racing in Newmarket
Pavillion plans
The new-look pavillion also forms part of the 10m plan
Newmarket racecourse in Suffolk is going to spend 10m in a bid to become "the Ascot of the East".

The money will be spent on new bars, restaurants and toilets. It is hoped the changes will make the course more popular with punters.

Work is already under way on bringing it into the 21st century starting with the re-roofing the 1930s grandstands.

The course's boundary will be extended, adding almost an acre of land and increasing the number of race-goers.

All the buildings behind the stands are to be knocked down, making way for new bars, restaurants and toilets.

Along with re-development, the three-day July meeting, known for its ladies day, will be rebranded the July Festival.

Fashion and music will play a larger part on all the days starting this summer. Building work due to finish next year.
