Year-round horse racing approved
Newmarket races
The all-weather track is planned to be ready by January 2005
A 6m scheme to bring all-weather horse racing to Newmarket could be up and running within a year.

The track, which was given planning permission on Wednesday night, will allow the Suffolk course to extend its April to November race season.

The new track of one mile and two furlongs will be made of a mixture of sand, wax and rubber and will be built next to the Rowley Mile course.

The design of the course now needs to be approved by the Jockey Club.

Fixture process

Clerk of the course Michael Prosser said: "If the response to that is positive, the final crucial hurdle will be to get an allocation of fixtures for 2005 from the British Horseracing Board.

"The fixture allocation process starts in April, so with planning permission now achieved we are well ahead of schedule."

If Newmarket is allocated fixtures and Jockey Club approval, building work, which will also include a new members' enclosure and office block, would start in June.

Spectators would be accommodated within the existing Rowley Mile stands.

The mixture used to build the course would be unaffected by frost or rain.
