Two explorers who completed a record-breaking expedition across the Antarctic are to be congratulated by the Prince of Wales on Tuesday. Patrick Woodhead, 29, from Suffolk and Londoner Alastair Vere Nicoll, 31, completed the first east to west crossing of the continent on skis.
They were part of a four-man team on the 58-day expedition that began in October 2004.
Prince Charles, who supported the trek, will sign the team's sledging flag.
World record
The team, which also included David de Rothschild and Canadian guide Paul Landry, began their journey by skis on 15 November from the foot of the Trans Atlantic mountains.
They set a new world record when they reached the South Pole in just 37 days.
With a little help from the kites they used to pull them along, the four explorers took another three weeks to reach the coast and complete the challenge.
They battled against some of the harshest conditions seen in the region for 15 years.
Mr Woodhead, who led the team, and Alastair Vere Nicoll, will present the team's sledging flag to Prince Charles at his Highgrove Estate in Gloucestershire.
